Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1(15 oz) can tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • Optional garnish: fresh parsley or green onions

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • Brown the beef:
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and onion; cook until the beef is browned and onion is soft. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Drain excess fat from the skillet and stir in tomato sauce, beef broth, rice, paprika, oregano, pepper, and salt. Mix well.
  • Transfer to baking dish:
Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread evenly.
  • Cover and bake:
Cover with foil and bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and liquid is absorbed.
  • Add cheese:
Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheese evenly over the top, and bake uncovered for an additional 5–10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Let it rest:
Allow casserole to sit for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley or green onions if desired.

Notes

  • You can use brown rice, but adjust cooking time and liquid accordingly.
  • To save time, use pre-cooked rice and reduce baking time by 10–15 minutes.
  • Ground turkey or chicken can be used as a leaner alternative to beef.
